Mission to Motion: State of their Mission | Sandy Lish

Castle's Mission to Motion - State of their Mission Series

Episode 1: Sandy Lish

Behind the Mission

Sandy Lish, principal and co-founder of The Castle Group, sat down with Connor Burke, assistant account executive at The Castle Group, to discuss what led her to start Mission to Motion.

First launched in partnership with the Fierce Urgency of Now Festival in 2021, Mission to Motion makes space for professionals from diverse communities and industries to engage in intimate discussions about how they can apply their mission and create positive motion in their communities.

The new series Mission to Motion: State of their mission brings you even closer to the local changemakers who are having an impact on Boston and beyond with one-to-one conversations about what led them to impact their community.

Sitting Down with Sandy

Connor: Hi, Sandy! Thank you for joining us.

Sandy: Thanks for talking about this.

Connor: We’re excited to talk a little bit about Mission to Motion. I know Mission to Motion was started in partnership with the fierce urgency of the festival in 2021 – why do you think this was a necessary activation?

Sandy: I was thinking about what I wish that I had known early in my career and one of the things that I really didn’t know about was that you can become a change maker, you can have a powerful work or personal mission that you pursue and that you can be effective around, even if you don’t come fully baked with a network, credentials and everything else.

So, I thought of all the people that I knew that have done that and have done it in different ways for different reasons and I thought I might not know everything, but I have access to a lot of people that know a lot and I can bring those people to the Fierce Urgency of Now event.

Connor: What are your long-term goals? What do you hope the impact of Mission to Motion is on the next generation coming into Boston?

Sandy: I’ve seen things come out of Mission to Motion already – like relationships that have been formed, ideas that have been hatched, collaborations that have happened. I think Boston has a reputation for being a hard city to break into, very hard, regardless of who you are, but especially sometimes because of who you are.

This hopefully paves the way for first generation college students, for people of color, for people new to the market, and for people who are not new to the market but don’t know how to create those relationships.

Connor: Going back to your one point about it being difficult to break into the industry or break into Boston even – what is one piece of advice you would give to an early to mid- career professional experiencing that difficulty right now? Difficulty trying to get known, build relationships, break into a market and build a network?

Sandy: I think the most important thing is to show up and be authentic.

It’s really important and it’s important to have these conversations with folks that have done incredible things that are still doing incredible things because if you don’t know how other people have done it, you have to make it up from scratch.

If can learn how people’s paths have unfolded, maybe there’s a path that resonates to you that’s like, yeah ‘I want to do it that way’ or ‘that’s something I care about and that’s the way I want to get involved in it.’

Connor: How can early to mid- career professionals engage with Mission to Motion? How can they get involved?

Sandy: I think there is a hunger for bringing people together and helping to accelerate the ability to create change makers.

There are ways we’re going to do it beyond this original panel concept, both in conversations that we’re going to be able to share through our content and also in ways that we connect folks with one another.

Perhaps it’s sometimes recognizing folks that are doing an amazing job and helping bring them to the forefront.

Connor: Sandy, thank you so much for sitting down and talking with me.

Sandy: I’m grateful for your support of it and for the team at Castle who believe in it and are interested in making the world a better place, starting with where we live.

So, thank you for the conversation.
